What is Assistive Technology?
AT promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing assistive technology devices and assistive technology services to accomplish such tasks. Assistive technology allows individuals with disabilities to function independently in community, education and employment activities.
An assistive technology device is any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially modified or customized that is used to increase maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. (29 U.S.C. Sec 2202(2)).
Assistive technology services assist an individual with a disability in the selection, purchase or use of an assistive technology device.
