DC AT Resource Center District of Columbia Assistive Technology Resource Center (DCATRC)
The DC Assistive Technology Program in collaboration with the District of Columbia Rehabilitation Services Administration (DCRSA) was opened in 1999. The DCATRC showcases the Assistive Technology devices and resources designed to help people with disabilities live, work, learn and play with increased independence. The center offers Assistive Technology device demonstrations and device loan services.
Device Demonstration Staff is available to help visitors at the center with demonstrations and to help them compare the features and benefits of a broad range of equipment like communications aids, voice activated computers, tools for daily living, and other technology for use in the workplace and classroom. The center is an ideal place to get hands on experience and demonstrations of tools for living. Device demonstration referral available for a consumer to obtain additional information related to the device demonstrated or other locations in DC.
Other services include information Assistance, Training, and Off-site demonstrations. The Center space is also available for Assistive Technology vendors, professionals, instructors, and speech language pathologists to conduct demonstration, evaluation and assessments. Internet Access is available at center for visitors. SorensonVrs equipment (video phone) is for use at the center to test for individuals with deaf or hard of hearing.
Device Load Program The Assistive Technology Equipment Lending Program (ATELP) or Device Loan Program was established to assist in decision making, to serve as a loaner during a device repair or to provide an accommodation on a short-term basis or other purposes. “Other” purposes include: self-education by an individual, self-education by an intermediary (e.g., a teacher) and training.
Who Can Borrow Devices? Consumers, family members, agency or school representatives, service providers working with individuals with disabilities, AT trainers, evaluators or instructors from DC.
How Does It Work? The device loan program is operated through the DC Assistive Technology Resource Center (DCATRC). It is recommended that you first visit the Center to review the available devices. Staff will assist you in the selection of devices and also provide basic training.
* The standard length of a device loan is two to four weeks.
* Borrowers and the person responsible for liability must complete and sign an agreement form.
* Borrowers are responsible for pick-up and return of all equipment.
Available equipment includes some augmentative communication devices, switches, adapted telephones, assistive listening devices, and hardware for computer access.
